Last year was a special year for Monarch Butterfly fanciers in Alberta, with an unusually high number of the species in the province. As well-known Canadian naturalist John Acorn, a University of Alberta biologist and chairman of the Alberta Lepidopterist Guild, said last summer, “Before last week, I’d only seen one monarch in Edmonton in my entire life. I’m now up to nine.”

This year, the situation is very different. In fact, the Monarch Butterfly population seems to have declined dramatically. Sighting of Monarchs across Canada have been sparse this year and the drop is worrying scientists. The overwintering Monarch population for 2012-2013 in Mexico was the smallest recorded to date. This census was sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund in Mexico’s Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, where most North American Monarchs spend the winter. The census found that the butterflies’ hibernation area covered only 1.19 hectares of forest, 60 percent less than the previous year, and well below the average of 7 hectares.
