Heading into prime vacation season each summer, we ask faculty, students, staff and alumni to tell us about books they like, and why they would recommend them to others. This year’s offerings are as extensive and diverse as ever: murder mysteries, elegant novels, thrillers, a children’s picture book and even a one-off short story, plus what motivates us to excel, the battle of Tippecanoe, a new view of Picasso, two U.N. peacemakers and Teddy Roosevelt in the jungle. Lettie DeSilva
Lettie Vera DeSilva, 94, a longtime resident of Franklin, and later Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 21, , at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady.
Lettie was born on July 15, , in Cazenovia, the daughter of Wallace and Jenny Ingersoll. For more than 30 years, she taught home economics at Franklin Central School, beginning in She was known as Mrs. Stilson for many years at FCS. Before her tenure there, Lettie spent a short time teaching chemistry in South New Berlin. She is a graduate of New York State University at Plattsburgh.
She was the beloved wife of the late Donald DeSilva and is survived by her sisters Janet (Robert, d.) Dewey and Martha (Leo, d.) Smith. She is the best mother in the world, according to her children Marian (Alfred) Sive of Glenville, and Janet (David) Stilson Chachere, New York, N.Y.
Lettie adored, and was adored by, the children of her husband’s first marriage. Among them she is survived by Gwen (Daniel Dickens) DeSilva, Liberty Hill, Texas; Gail (Alpha, d.) Dewey, Conroe, Texas; and Janet (Daniel) Branigan, Franklin; she is also beloved by her children’s spouses, a bounty of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a longtime member of the Washington Reading Circle, the O
