Description:
The Ottomans were especially interested in the recording of historical events and at the behest of Murad III (r. AH – / AD –95), the court historian Luqman compiled this versified account of the reign of Murad’s grandfather, Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent (r. AH –74 / AD –66). The text is largely concerned with Süleyman’s defeat of Hungary in the summer of , and the illustrations included here depict his arrival before the city of Szigetvar, the destruction and fall of the city and the sultan’s death and funeral. (He died during the siege of the city.) The simple and direct style of these paintings is typical of Ottoman historical illustration.
